Role of pharmacist in patient counselling

Pharmacists play an important role in making a patient understand about the importance of medication by understanding the patient’s situation. There are a number of patients in our society who are dealing with different diseases and are not concerned about the importance of routine health checkups and proper medication to cure the disease. There are three principles of counselling:

  • To know the patient’s understanding about the disease and medication
  • Let the patient know about the positive and negative effect of medication
  • To motivate the patient to adhere to the treatment.

This helps in reducing the chances of the side effects of the drugs, increasing patient’s awareness about the treatment and satisfaction of treating them in a good way.

There are certain features which are adopted by the pharmacists to counsel the patients.

  1. Trust:

This is one of the most important features to build a trust. If you are successful in building trust then the patient will feel relaxed to share the issue with you and you will be able to help him or her in a better way.

  1. Verbal communication:

Counselling should include verbal communication for better understanding about the patient’s health. You should ask them about what the doctor told them about the disease and the medication for that, ask questions regarding their medical conditions so that they can answer properly and you will be able to understand the therapies and medical requirements.

  1. Listen:

One of the major role of pharmacist in patient counselling is listening. It includes 4 main points:

Active listening is when two ways interaction is going on.

Passive listening is when a pharmacist listens carefully to what a patient is telling.

Acknowledgement is when a patient tells you something and you nod your head in response during passive listening.

Encouragement is when after listening to everything about the patient you encourage him or her about taking therapies and complete the medication till the end and everything will be back to normal soon.

  1. Privacy and confidentiality:

It is necessary to ensure the patient’s privacy and confidentiality. This will help in making a patient feel relaxed and comfortable to share personal problems. In many health care organizations, there are dedicated spaces to discuss personal problems of the patients.

  1. Motivation:

After listening about the details of the patients, it is important to motivate him or her to follow the instructions and complete the treatment in a prescribed manner to avoid any side effects and cure the disease which is an ultimate aim of the treatment and the counselling.
